Text to Speech (TTS)

About Text to Speech

hotComm supports the Microsoft Text-to-Speech (TTS) capability. When TTS is enabled, the text messages posted in hotComm are read to you by the Microsoft SAPI voices.

Note: the sound plays on your computer only. Others in your room or session do not hear your TTS voices.

To enable or disable TTS:

  1. In hotComm CL: Select Preferences, and select Text-to-Speech.

In hotComm Lite and Standard/Pro: Select Options, and select Text-to-Speech.

  2. To enable TTS, select the voice you want to hear. If no voices are listed, see Installing Microsoft SAPI and voices.

    To disable TTS, select None.

  3. Check the items that you want read to you: Transcript, hotScript, Private Messages.

  4. If you want your own messages read, check Myself.

  5. To automatically silence the TTS voices while someone in the room or session is actually speaking, check VoIP Priority.

Notes:
  • Mute-TTS and Mute-All suppress TTS voices.
  • Your TTS setting is automatically saved, and persists to your next hotComm session.

Installing Microsoft SAPI and voices

Microsoft Speech API (SAPI) must be installed on your computer. Also, any voices you want to use must be installed on your computer.

Note: Windows XP includes Microsoft SAPI, but not all the voices. Other versions of Windows do not include SAPI, unless you installed it yourself.

For non-XP systems: To download and install Microsoft SAPI, including the Sam, Mike and Mary voices:
  1. Download the API from the following link
TTS: Microsoft Speech API (SAPI) for non-XP systems

  2. Follow the instructions in the installer. Press OK upon finish.

  3. For best results, restart your computer.

For XP systems: To download and install the other Microsoft voices (Mike, Mary):
  1. Download the API from the following link

  2. Follow the instructions in the installer. Press OK upon finish.
