You can export a copy of your identity and license from one computer and import it into another computer. You can repeat that process multiple times to copy your identity/license to multiple computers. However, you can log in from only one computer at a time.

You can use this technique to backup your license/identity, to share the license on multiple computers, and to move the license onto a new computer.

Export-Import Identity

To copy a license from one computer to another, you export your identity from one computer, and import it into another: This process also copies your User list, abbreviation expansions, and other files.

On computer #1:

  1. Right-click the Smiley face icon on the bottom line of your hotComm window and select Registration.

  2. Click Export Identity. If this button is grayed out, disconnect from all rooms or sessions and try again.

  3. In the Export Identity window, enter a temporary password. The password is case-sensitive. Then, click OK.

Remember your temporary password and website!

  5. Close hotComm before you begin the import into computer #2.

On computer #2:

  1. Install hotComm, but stop at the Registration Wizard. If hotComm is already installed, open the Registration Wizard.

To open the Registration Wizard, open your Windows Start menu, then select Programs, then 1stWorks Corporation, then hotComm, and then Register hotComm.

  2. In the Registration Wizard, select the second option, I want to import.

Note: This step replaces existing registration information (if any) with information from the exported identity.

Enter the website and temporary password from the Export Identity process on computer #1 and click Next. (Remember that the password is case-sensitive.)

    Import

  3. The identity from computer #1 has now been imported into computer #2. Click Finish.

  4. Start hotComm.

  5. To verify that your identity has been imported, right-click the Smiley face icon on the bottom line of your hotComm window and select Registration. This should show the same information as on computer #1.

  6. Repeat the export and import steps as needed to copy the license to additional computers.

Note: Be sure to repeat these steps whenever you apply an Unlock Code to register a purchase, so that all your installations use the same registration.

Export-Import Identity FAQ

What data must match?
The website and password. The password is case-sensitive.

How long is my identity saved on the 1stWorks VNS server?
Approximately 30 days after export, or until you import it, whichever comes first.

How many times can I import an exported identity?
Once, but you can repeat the export-import process multiple times to copy your identity/license to additional computers.

Is the identity deleted during export or import?
The identity is NOT deleted from your computer when you export it.

Where is my license stored?
Your license is stored on your computer, not on the 1stWorks Servers. That is why you move a license from one computer to another rather than just download new information from a server.

Which files are exported?
This process exports (and imports) the registration file (HCRG.DAT) and these files in the hotComm/USR folder: abbreviations (ABBREXP.HCA), user list (CONTACTS.HCD), personal info (PERSONAL.HCD).

If you have customized IM-Live or ezPeer files, copy them manually. See Copying other files.
