How to give hotCam Presentations

This document describes how to give presentations using the hotCam still and timed camera options.

Hint: use a consistent background for slides. If you use a consistent background, no matter how complex, very little data is sent, because after the first slide to any user, hotComm sends only the image changes. For example, if you have blank white slides in the middle of fancy colored slides, they will take longer because of the large amount of new data.

Powerpoint, Excel and Word

For Powerpoint, Excel, Word and similar applications:
  1. Bring up your presentation in Edit Mode (not Slide Show mode).

  2. Resize the slide (presentation) area to the smallest comfortable viewing size for the guests.

  3. Position hotComm so that it does not overlap this window.

  4. Right-Click on the hotCam Camera icon and select Timed (1s) Window, then left-click on the icon momentarily and your mouse pointer should become the camera icon. Move this over the presentation window and left-click again.

  5. The microphone icon will flash yellow each time hotComm checks your screen for changes or sends them to the meeting server. During long periods of yellow (over 2 seconds), you should try to keep comentary to a minimum as the server is busy updating the image.

  6. Talk to images at least 15 seconds as it may take the server this long to recharge for a new slide.

If you want to point to any items of interest, click the hotPointer at the very bottom left of hotComm. Your cursor becomes a red/blue arrow and its dynamic movements are duplicated on the guest screens. You can leave this active through the entire presentation or click the hotPointer icon again to turn it off.

Application Presentations

For other applications (unlike above... here you are showing application features and "how-to's" to the group):
  1. Bring up the application.

  2. Resize the application area to the smallest comfortable viewing size for the guests.

  3. Position hotComm so that it does not overlap the application.

  6. Talk to MAJOR changes in your application screens at least 15 seconds as it may take the server this long to recharge for a new slide. Incremental updates like drop menus etc. are normally done each second.

If you want to point to any items of interest, you may click the hotPointer at the very bottom left of hotComm. Your cursor becomes a red/blue arrow and its dynamic movements are dupliced on the guest screens. You can leave this active through the entire presentation or click the hotPointer icon again to turn it off.

Stills Presentations

For presenting an individual snapshot:

Note: This is a rather rare mode of presenting. Try to use the convenience of the Timed camera as much as possible.

  1. Right-click on the hotCam Camera icon and select Still, then left-click on the icon momentarily and your mouse pointer should become the camera icon.

Move this over the presentation window and left-click again. Each time you do this, it will send another image that replaces the 1st image.

  2. Talk to each Still snapshot for at least 15 seconds as it may take the server this long to recharge for a new slide.

A Presentation Trick

For presenting a rectangular section of a Window:

Note: This trick might be useful for some users.

  1. Launch your application normally.

Click on the Windows Start Button, Select Run and enter the word NOTEPAD and hit Enter. The windows NotePad application should display.

Re-size and locate this dialog over the area you wish to send to the group.

  2. Right-click on the hotCam Camera icon and select Timed (1s) Application, then left-click on the icon momentarily and your mouse pointer should become the camera icon.

Move this over the NOTEPAD window and left-click again. Quickly, Click on the applicion area surounding Notepad forcing it to go in back of the application. hotCam sill remembers the coordinates of the Notepad window and ends up displaying that area of the application. To change the size or move the area capture area, click on Notepad on the Windows taskbar and simply move or re-size it.

  3. Talk to each major change in the window area for at least 5-10 seconds as it may take the server this long to recharge for a new slide.
