Import Peers from Email - File Formats

The format of the CSV (comma separated value) file that you import into hotComm must be similar to one of these formats:

  • Microsoft Outlook and Outlook Express

    • The first row contains these headings. Other headings in the row are ignored. Data is imported from the columns that have these headings. The headings are case-sensitive and must be exactly as shown here.

      Name
      First Name
      Last Name
      Nickname
      E-mail Address

    • Data may be text delimited with double-quotation marks, but double-quotation marks are not required. Microsoft Outlook adds the quotation marks; Outlook Express does not.

This is an example of a file exported from Microsoft Outlook 2000

    "First Name","Last Name","Company","Business City","E-mail Address"
    "Amelia","Earhart",,,"amelia@xyz.net"
    "Bob","Testing","XYZ Corp",,"Bxx@xyz.net"

This is an example of a file exported from Microsoft Outlook Express 5:

    First Name,Last Name,Name,Nickname,E-mail Address,Business City,Company
    Amelia,Earhart,Amelia Earhart,,amelia@xyz.net,,
    Bob,Testing,Bob Testing,Bxx,bxx@xyz.net,,

  • Netscape

The first row does not contain headings, but does include an @ in at least one field. In this case, the hotComm import takes data from specific columns. The columns and data are:

    ColumnData
    1Display name
    2Last name
    3First name
    7Email address
    17Nickname

This is an example of a file exported from Netscape 4.77:

    Amelia Earhart,Earhart,Amelia,,,,amelia@xyz.net,,,,,,,,,,AE
    Bob Testing,Testing,Bob,,,,bxx@xyz.net,,,,,,,,,,Bxx

Install multiple copies for the same account

You can install multiple copies of hotComm for the same user account. This may be helpful if you want others to be able to contact you regardless of your location. If you do:

  • You can run only one copy at a time.

  • Each copy will have its own set of peers and files. For example, files transferred to one computer are not available to the other. Peers added to one are not automatically added to the other.

Install

To install multiple copies for the same account:

  1. Install and register hotComm on the first computer.

  2. Install hotComm on the second computer -- but do not register it.

  3. Copy the registration file from the first computer to the second computer.

    Filename:HCrg.DAT
    Location:hotComm/CFG folder

If you registered the second installation before reading these instructions, decide which registration you want to keep. Delete the HCrg.Dat file from the computer with the registration you don't want (or move it to a backup location). Then, copy the HCrg.DAT from the computer with the registration you want to keep to the computer with the registration you don't want.

Copy Peer List and Abbreviation Expansions

If the peer list on one of your installations is well established and you want to start with the same peer list on the other installation, you can copy it from one installation to the other. Note: this does not merge the two lists. It replaces one list with the other.

Filename:Contacts.hcd
Location:hotComm/USR folder

Similarly, you can copy established set of Abbreviation Expansions from one hotComm installation to another.

Filename:ABBREXP.HCA
Location:hotComm/USR folder

Warning! Before you copy any other files from the /USR folder, please read about "User Files", under Set up hotComm in the hotComm User Guide.

Launching Microsoft Word in a hotWeb window

The hotWeb collaboration feature requires that your Internet Explorer is configured for in-place activating of the document server. With in-place activating of the document server, the hotWeb window opens, and the Word document is displayed inside the hotWeb window.

If hotWeb opens, but then Word documents are displayed in a Word shell instead of inside the hotWeb window, your Internet Explorer is configured to launch the document server as a stand-alone application, instead of in-place activation.

Please see the following Microsoft problem report for information on how to update your Internet Explorer configuration: PRB: In-Place Activating Document Servers in Internet Explorer (Q259970).

Raptor Firewall 503 Error

If your computer is behind a Raptor firewall, some HTTP and SMTP connections may be refused, displaying a '503' error.

This may happen if the ISP that provides your HTTP server is not the same ISP that provides the DNS lookup for that server.

FireTower, Inc. provides an explanation of how to configure your Raptor firewall to allow the connection. See the Raptor FAQs at http://firetower.com/faqs/general/http_smtp_denied.html.
